Little Sur River, California This river in the Big Sur area is an important spawning stream for threatened steehead. It flows for 25 miles to this spot on the central coast, making this dramatic S curve before emptying into the Pacific Ocean. I liked the gentle light before the sun rose high enough to light the scene directly.
Pohono Bridge and the Merced River, Yosemite National Park A long shutter speed gave this photo a soft look, which I hoped would make it feel like a painting. Pohono is an Ahwahneechee word meaning "puffing wind." It was the original name for what is now called Bridalveil Falls.
Bainbridge Island, Washington This slope above Rockaway Beach was covered with wildflowers, including these poppies. The fog bank in the distance hides the Seattle skyline and softened the background of the scene. I loved the sun's triangular reflection, and the backlighting of the poppy flowers.
