Palouse Falls, Washington The lowering sun caught both the falls and these wildflowers growing on the rim of the gorge. A few minutes later, the sun left the flowers and part of the falls in shadow.
North Fork, Sol Duc River, Olympic National Park, Washington This photo was taken near where we once camped about 15 years ago. The river's name is from the Quileute word meaning "sparkling waters." It's a good name for this rushing river in springtime. Its headwaters are on Mount Appleton.
Little Sur River, California This river in the Big Sur area is an important spawning stream for threatened steehead. It flows for 25 miles to this spot on the central coast, making this dramatic S curve before emptying into the Pacific Ocean. I liked the gentle light before the sun rose high enough to light the scene directly.
