Mount Rainier National Park A telephoto shot of the lower part of the sun halo brings out the beauty of the wispy clouds. Part of a second halo runs along the bottom left.
Sun halo, Mount Rainier National Park This double halo greeted us on father's day. We chased these halos for some time. I've never seen halos so clear and colorful, and never two at once. The wider ring never did fully encircle the sun but it did continue to add fire to the sky. Sun haloes often create sun dogs (parhelia) at their horizontal extents. These are all created by ice crystals perfectly lined up in the cloud so as to refract and reflect the light to the viewer.
