Triumph Of Peace And Harmony

Prusik Peak, one of the Enchantment Peaks in the Stuart Range of the Cascade Mountains, from Gnome Tarn On a very cold October morning, the early sun lights up the larch trees that make such a beautiful foreground for 8,040 foot Prusik Peak. The peak was named in 1948 for the Austrian inventor of the knot used by climbers. Gnome Tarn is one of the Enchantment Lakes in the Alpine Lakes Wilderness. I feel very fortunate to have gotten this photo. We had to win the lottery to get a permit, then climb over 7,740 feet to get up there. And on the last morning, the wind died down and the clouds formed just as the light reached perfection.

The Unplanned Effect

Ahwahnee Bridge and the Merced River, Yosemite Valley This beautiful three-arch stone bridge was built across the Merced River in 1928. We discovered it by accident one October evening on our fifth visit to Yosemite, when the fall colors were reflected in the river. It’s easy to find, but somehow had eluded us. An unplanned delight.

Hooker Corner Panorama, Aoraki/Mount Cook National Park

This panorama is composed of 72 overlapping vertical exposures, with a field of view of 185 degrees. Beginning at the far left (easterly direction), it encompasses a series of peaks with evocative names like The Acolyte, The Nun’s Veil, Botanical Ridge, The Armchair, Monastery Peak, plus The Abbess and The Abbott. Mounts Blackburn and Caitriana dominate the left center, while the view continues all the way to the Sealy Range on the west. There was no large body of water here. The foreground reflection comes from a puddle approximately two meters wide and only about 5cm deep. The reflection only became evident when i placed the camera almost in the water.

Millpond, Early December

Blakely Harbor mill pond at high tide, reflecting the evergreen forest on the hillside. The lighter green on the tree branches is old man’s beard lichen. The pond was part of sawmill operations that started in1864. Logs were floated into the pond on the tide, then pulled into the mill by chains. The third and last mill on the site closed in 1922.

Spirit Of Repose

Mount Hood, Oregon At 11,240 feet, Mount Hood is the fourth highest peak in the Cascades. This view is from Trillium Lake, about seven and a half miles away. We arrived well before sunrise, and watched the mists swirling off the lake, sometimes obscuring the mountain. A few minutes before I took this photo, some ducks landed in the foreground, obscuring the reflection. Shortly after, the clouds moved in to hide the summit. Timing and patience are everything.

Where The Peaks Meet The Sky

Mount Shuksan, Cascade Range, Washington The mountain is reflected in one of several tarns along the Kuhlsan Ridge. I have always loved the shape of this mountain, and often admire it from afar. A golden beam of sunlight was just starting to cross in front of the mountain. The highest point is Summit Peak, and just below are the Hanging Glacier and Upper Curtis Glacier. The name is from Indian words, but there are at least four different words that may have been the source.

Autumn Reflections On Gull Lake, Eastern Sierra Gull Lake is one of four lakes along the June Lake Loop in the eastern Sierra Nevada. On this mid-October day, I thought the aspen on the western shore of the lake mixed nicely with the evergreens. This is a good spot for sunrise reflections of the mountains

El Capitan Reflection, Merced River, Yosemite National Park Yosemite provides lots of opportunities for compositions like this, each unique. The color comes from the late afternoon sun on the face of El Capitan.

Mirror Of Sky

Ucluelet, Vancouver Island, British Columbia The Nuu-chah-nulth name for this place means “people of the safe harbor." This inlet takes on different personalities depending on the time of day and the weather. In calm weather, it is a great reflecting pool for the early morning clouds. We have enjoyed watching black bears on the shore and sea lions in the water.

In Silent Reflection

Convict Lake, Eastern Sierra Convict Lake is a popular fishing spot, located at 7,800 feet in the Sherwin Range. A trail circles the lake, and we have enjoyed both the autumn colors and the bird life from the trail.

Last Stroke Of The Clearing Storm

Tenaya Lake, Yosemite National Park I caught the lightning by accident. I had spent several hours along the Dana Fork of the Tuolumne River, enjoying the rapids, until the thunder started to roll. The storm was far enough away when I got to Tenaya Lake that it seemed safe to grab some shots of the great reflections in the lake. It was only when I looked at this image later that I realized I had lucked into the lighting.

Serene, Majestic, Ungovernable

Sunrise At Kennedy Lake, Vancouver Island, British Columbia Every time we are in Ucluelet, I try to catch the sunrise at this spot on Kennedy Lake. Once, as I waited for the light, a black bear passed along the shore a ways behind me. Since then, I've made more noise while waiting for the show. Every morning is unique, but the calm water this June day made for a soft photo that conveys what I love about this spot.

What We Call Darkness

Water Mirror

Kennedy Lake, Vancouver Island, British Columbia Almost the same viewpoint, but a different time of day with clear weather gave the lake a much different look. The gentle golden glow of the early morning sun gave even lighting to the whole scene. The morning mist was dissipating but still softened the view of the far shore.

Natural Symmetry

Olympic National Park, Washington The clear waters of Lake Crescent are over 1,000 feet deep. It was formed by the glaciers during the last ice age. This spot at the eastern end of the lake has great sunset views.

Half Dome and the Merced River, Yosemite Valley This is the view looking due east. For a view from the same spot looking south, see the first photo in the "Landscape" portfolio. In the fall, the river forms a perfect mirror for reflections of sky, mountain and trees.

The Wings Of A Cloud

Upper Tipsoo Lake, Mount Rainier National Park Lupines and magenta paintbrush color the near shore shortly after sunrise. The cloud over the mountain hung around the longest time even as the others dissipated. Mount Rainier often creates its own clouds and weather.

Bathed In Glorious Light

Sleepy Bay, Freycinet Peninsula, Tasmania Taken at sunrise on the cliffs above the bay. The water in the foreground is actually a fairly small puddle. It looks larger because I set the camera right on the rocks and used a wide angle lens to accentuate the foreground.

In Harbor

Ucluelet, Vancouver Island, British Columbia Ucluelet is located on the western edge of Barkley Sound. The late afternoon sun creates great reflections of the fishing boats in this working harbor.

Shimmer

Merced River at Swinging Bridge, Yosemite Valley The river was flowing at a high level from the snow melt. Here at Swinging Bridge, the waters slowed and created peaceful reflections. There is a more iconic view of Yosemite Falls to the left of this scene.
