Soft Morning Moment

Mount Shuksan, North Cascades National Park. This spectacular mountain gets its name from Native American word šéqsən, meaning "high peak." An apt name for a mountain with four faces and five ridges, with towers, glaciers, and a fine location near Mount Baker. This is a monotone infrared photo taken just after sunrise.

Mt. Rundle with Morning Clouds

Mt. Rundle, Banff National Park, Canadian Rockies Early morning fog beginning to dissipate, drifting still in the Bow Valley. This is a less recognizable side of Mt. Rundle; the west facing slope is most commonly photographed, usually from the Vermilion Lakes. This scene was beautifully green in the beams of sun, but I enjoyed the way black and white focuses attention on the structure of the mountain slopes.

Grace Presently

The Canadian Rockies reflected in a small lake. A cold, dreamy morning of fog, cloud and shadows. I was attracted to the many triangles in this scene; several in the mountains, one large one made by the assembly of trees on the right, the multitude of stretched triangles of the reflecting trees. Some mist rising from the lake, frost on the trees, and a fog bank behind the trees made the whole experience a bit mystical.

San José de Gracia, Las Trampas, New Mexico

This is one of the two iconic bell towers that frame the doors of this venerable parish church. There are older mission churches still standing, but this one is very well preserved and looks much like it did when completed in 1776. Village residents continue to maintain the exterior adobe walls. The church became a National Historic Landmark in 1970, avoiding a road project that would have threatened the peace of the place. Such peace, however, can only be understood in conjunction with the efforts to extinguish and replace indigenous traditions and spirituality. Architecture like this can be appreciated while the history is regretted. Black and white infrared photo.

This is Non-Iconic Iceland, with the arctic foliage showing off its fall colors. Further south, the still green shrubbery was full of crow berries, but here in the far north the golds, reds, oranges appear even more vibrant under a gray sky. Mile after mile was graced by this artist's palette of color

Merced River Reflections

The colors of winter reflected in the flowing water of the Merced River, Yosemite Valley.

Millpond, Early December

Blakely Harbor mill pond at high tide, reflecting the evergreen forest on the hillside. The lighter green on the tree branches is old man’s beard lichen. The pond was part of sawmill operations that started in1864. Logs were floated into the pond on the tide, then pulled into the mill by chains. The third and last mill on the site closed in 1922.

Forest Inhabitants Collage

I started this piece while reading and thinking about the remarkable ways the creatures and plants of the forest communicate with each other. It started with the simple idea of drawing the complex underground communication pathways of the trees, but then I realized many more characters belong to the story. So I just kept adding. There are 20 partially disguised denizens of the forest, both fauna and flora. All but one are hiding. Some are looking right at you (my own eyes among them). Others are looking at each other. And some are not able to look at all. Can you look closely enough to find them all?

The Heart of the World

John Muir often wrote poetically of the world’s wild gardens. This one is in a canyon in Grand Staircase-Escalante National Monument. The little meadow is mostly overlooked by hikers intent on getting to what they believe are grander sights. If only they hiked more mindfully they wouldn’t miss out on the more intimate glories of the world. “As long as I live, I'll hear waterfalls and birds and winds sing. I'll interpret the rocks, learn the language of flood, storm, and the avalanche. Grand Staircase

Grand Staircase-Escalante National Monument is full of spectacular geologic features. This one is the Cockscomb, which runs for miles alongside Cottonwood Creek. The red rock is one of many tooth-like formations that suggested the name. I admired the various tableaux created by the desert vegetation growing on the canvas of red rock. So pleasant to pass among these as I followed the creek bed.
