Mesquite Flat Sand Dunes, Death Valley National Park The sand in these dunes is made up of quartz and feldspar torn from rock in the Cottonwood Mountains to the northwest. The photo was taken shortly before the sun dropped behind the mountains and left the dunes with flat lighting.
