Pattern Out Of Time

Patterns in the ice from New Zealand’s Hooker Glacier floats in the waters that will soon head down stream to Lake Pukaki. The sky was bright blue this day, which accounts for the brilliant blues, while the surrounding mountains were picking up the warm colors of the sunset. The ice is a beautiful if sad gift of the quickly retreating glacier.

Middle Paradise Valley, Kings Canyon National Park n the High Sierra, with a boring sky above, the sunlight reflected in the gently flowing South Fork of the Kings River. This shot was taken near where Ansel Adams photographed Paradise Valley as part of the mural project for the park service in 1936. Those photos were instrumental in getting Kings Canyon named a national park in 1940.

The Waimakirri River, photographed here from a commercial plane approaching Christchurch airport, has its origina near Arthur's Pass in the Southern Alps. It becomes a braided river as it flows through the Canterbury Plans to the Pacific Ocean. This photo is a combination of two photos, taken a year apart. The title above is a translation of the Maori name for the river.

Lee Vining Canyon, California The Lee Vining Scenic Byway runs from Tioga Pass through the Inyo National Forest and on to Mono Lake. There are beautiful groves of aspen along the creek. I created a more abstract view of the trees by moving the camera during the exposure.
